Worrying things

One of them crazy Ozzie people I'm working for found an article in one of the crazy rags about some woman who fell off a scaffold in the old Paradise Theatre (cinema, not stage theatre, though apparently it used to be, once upon a time). I'm not entirely sure why they decided that it was something worth investigating, except that one of them went to see the girl who fell in the hospital, and she went batshit and talked about falling up instead of down. No clue. Anyway, they made me ring up and see if we couldn't get a look around (which I was happy to do, since, frankly, old theatres are awesomely beautiful - much nicer than the shit holes I tend to end up working in).

I told some lie about us being a group of old building enthusiasts, laid on the charm. It's what I'm good at, after all. In fact, the lady on the phone didn't seem at all concerned as to why we wanted to look - hardly worth fabricating a story, in the end, though I guess I don't really want to tell people that I, a perfectly normal, sane Brooklyn girl would willingly consort with Ozzie nutters.

God, but that theatre was beautiful, though. Worth it, regardless, despite people being what they were. Meredith was happy to let us wander on our own, while she went out to get some food for one of the other guys working there (funny - I never did see any sign of him, but I guess there were probably places I didn't see). Amazing. Beautiful foyer, perfectly restored to 1920s style, with a bar off in one direction, and the auditorium in the other. I'm definitely going to come back - as an actual patron, though, I mean. Old movies, with all the style. Fantastic.

We kind of ended up splitting up a bit. My boss went up to the projecter room, while the doctor and the-- the other woman, whatever she does, decided to climb the scaffolding and look at the roof. Actually, the doctor went first, and then she got all interested in the ceiling (it was a mirror - weird effect, there) and called the other woman up. I stuck to the stage (or what's left of it) - beautiful accoustics.

But that's when they started getting really weird. I mean... really weird. Like, they screamed, and got all weird, and I tried to figure out what was going on, and then they fucking fell off the scaffolding! Idiots. Morons. Numbskulls. They acted all weird when they landed, too. Like, waving their arms as if they were trying to get away from something. I ran to help, of course, and it was all I could do to shake one of them out of it. My boss joined us, around then, and seemed really interested in the shit they were talking: something about corpses in the ceiling, pulling them up, making them fall upwards, just like that earlier woman. Crazy talk. Too much imagination.

And then, if you'd believe it: the scaffolding fell down, nearly on top of us! I managed to get out of the way - in fact, all of us did, except for the doctor, who got trapped. This freaked them out soo much that they decided to leave (I was just embarrassed - what terrible disrespect for a beautiful old place! I bet they caused loads of damage).

There was some strange sound, like plaster cracking, on our way out, and half of our group ran for the door, all freaked out. They were really, really upset by it all. I don't get it. Thing was, and I guess it might have been slightly creepy, but the little plaster dogs that were part of the design were... gone. Just plaster dust, remaining. Funny. This kind of sealed their idiocy, though, because they all pelted out. I had to grab their coats, else they'd freeze outside.

Even funnier, though, was that I tried to explain and apologise, when Meredith came back, and she just got really freaked out and shut the door. As if she believed something really wrong was happening.

Like I said - these people are cracked. I tried to tell them about how much I like Steve Irwin, and they just went nuts at me. Asked me about Fosters, and... weirdos. I don't get Australians. I wonder if they're all mad, or if it's just these ones... Or is it just academics? I knew college was a waste of time...
